The goal of the project “Development of 5G systems for the protection of life and public health in Riga” or “5G4LIVES”* is to promote public and environmental safety in Riga recreation areas and the Turin Hills area, while simultaneously equipping the Riga Municipal Police with the latest technologies. In Latvia, the recreation areas Vecāķi and Kīšezers beaches have been selected as pilot territories for the project, where it is planned to install the latest 5G technologies and introduce automated drone flights in the work of the municipal police.
To achieve this goal, the first year of the project implementation is intended for strategic planning and environmental preparation, i.e. information about the selected pilot territories and technologies is collected, compiled and analyzed. Various use cases have been identified and evaluated within the framework of the project so far in terms of geographical, technological and regulatory frameworks. This summer, under the leadership of ECO, in cooperation with partners, a document is being developed on the essential minimum requirements for 5G mobile network coverage in specific territories and in general (Study on the essential minimum requirements for 5g mobile network coverage). Work is also underway on the development of a methodology for practical measurements and testing of essential technical parameters of 5G network coverage and performance using UAV in certain air corridors.
In order to verify the compliance of the technical parameters of the created 5G network coverage and performance with the set essential requirements and the compliance with the theoretical calculation results, it is necessary to carry out practical measurements in the intended UAV operation areas in accordance with the developed methodology.
We have carried out the first measurements in test mode. The tests carried out will help to draw the necessary conclusions on the further development and adjustment of the methodology in the air corridors selected in the project.
A small insight into the process of conducting test measurements:
The project is being implemented under the coordination of the Riga City Council in cooperation with the Municipality of Turin, the Polytechnic Institute of Turin, Vefresh, and the telecommunications companies "Latvijas Mobilais telefons" and "Windtre".
